What is Reiki? & other FAQs

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands”* (although in most cases there is no physical touching) and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

  • International Centre for Reiki Training has an excellent FAQ section here, which will help answer such questions as:
    How does reiki work?
    Is it a religion?
What does a session feel like?

Some specific questions that Valerie has fielded include:

Are there any side effects?
There are no negative effects associated with reiki-unless you become so relaxed you fall asleep and miss your next appointment!

What should I expect in a session with Valerie?
You’ll lie on a comfortable table, fully clothed, with a blanket if you choose.
Reiki may involve some light “laying of the hands” but this is only with your prior consent and approval. Reiki is just as effective when the hands are held above the parts of the body through which energy is being channelled.

Valerie’s goal is to ensure a comfortable, relaxing session for her clients, and will address any concerns or questions prior to a session beginning.
